What is an Interference Engine? - In the internal combustion engine, the timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft(s) which in turn controls the opening and closing of the engine's valves. Interference engines are a form of engine design where the valves protrude ("interfere") into the cylinder's combustion chambers when the piston is opposite the valves. In such engines the valve timing must be correct. When a timing belt or timing chain breaks or jumps timing , the piston may contact an open valve. This piston to valve contact may cause damage to the valve piston and other engine components.
